Ever had the desire to quit your lame 9 to 5 job, tell your boss to shove it, pack up and start traveling the world?

All of us have had that desire at one point! The thing that stopped you was probably the same thing that stops most people: money.

“How will I pay for my flights, food, lodging, transportation, yada, yada, yada,” you asked yourself.

Don’t let these concerns bother you too much, because there is an underground, growing group of travelers who are utilizing some simple but hidden techniques to make significant incomes while traveling.

Here’s an overview of how we make money traveling and by landing travel jobs:

Underground Travel Income Method #1 – Traditional Travel Job - Hold a job that either a) pays for us to travel or b) is located in the place we wish to travel to. This is the lowest paying and most complicated method of all, but is the most commonplace.

Common jobs that pay for travels are for professional speakers, salespeople, package couriers, flight attendants, travel nurses/doctors, conservationists, cruise ship workers, etc.

Travel jobs located in the places we wish to go to can be any of the above, but also are specific to the location we travel to. There are some FUN jobs overseas that are looking for foreign workers!

Underground Travel Income Method #2 – Travel Writing – Travel writing jobs for magazines are more common than you may imagine. However, there are LOADS of other ways to write as you travel and make money, including blogging, picking up projects from sites like Elance and Guru, and writing travel guides, both online and offline.

Underground Travel Income Method #3 – Selling Affiliate Products – Using a simple website, you can drive online traffic to a product that will be of interest to your online followers. Don’t be intimidated by this! It can be as easy as using your very own Facebook or Myspace profile. Affiliate products typically pay 50% to 75%, so you can make a very healthy income for selling just a few objects.

Underground Travel Income Method #4 – Filming Your Adventures – If you’ve got the camera out and you’re taking pictures, why not switch it to ‘film’ mode and make money from it? You simply make a video of your destinations using iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, then use your videos to create a customer base!

Underground Travel Income Method #5 – Podcasting – If filming scares you off or intimidates you, you can make an iTunes podcast. It is easier than ever to get listed in iTunes and there’s a HUGE audience of podcast listeners. Simply talk about the places you visit two or three times a week and watch how your following grows… and how your bank account grows!

Underground Travel Income Method # 6 – Ebay – The common misconception about Ebay is that you have to sell a physical product to make money. Here’s the trick: You can set up a fulfillment house to ship your product (or hire your little sister or the neighborhood kid). All you have to do is create your Ebay post from an internet café and collect the money!

Take any one of these six ‘travel job’ methods, and there are hundreds of travelers all over the world making more money than they would at a regular ‘job…’ and they’re living it up at exotic, world-class destinations. Take your pick, and take action on the ideas here!

The best time to travel is in the holidays, right? Not if you want to make big savings on your traveling costs it’s not. If you travel in off peak (or low season) periods, or even in the shoulder season, you’ll find traveling costs a lot less.

Where are you traveling? Do you know the peak travel times for this destination? Summer and spring, no matter where you are, are generally considered the peak seasons to travel, unless you are a winter sports enthusiast. In that case, ski resorts will be having their peak season in winter. And what hemisphere are you thinking of visiting? The seasons differ depending on whether you are north or south. For example, the North America summer months are June, July, August but in Australia the summer months are December, January and February. You will need to research your destination to find out the low season times to visit.

First of all, what type of savings can you expect to make if you travel in the off-peak season?

1. Air fares are much cheaper. There are less people wanting to fly so air carriers drop their prices to attract customers. Take advantage of these great savings. If you are traveling in the high season, see if you can book a flight mid-week. These flights are generally cheaper too.

2. Accommodation is cheaper and more readily available. In high season it can be difficult to find a place to stay in popular tourist destinations and when you do find somewhere it can be up to twice as much as when traveling in the off peak.

3. Eating in restaurants can be cheaper too. Owners will be trying to attract patrons so see what sort of deals you can find when eating out.

There are some other positives to traveling in the off peak season, other than saving money. There are fewer tourists for one, so visiting any cultural sight will be much more enjoyable. You can get more of an idea of what a destination is really like without the thousands of extra people. Experiencing the true culture is a real bonus. Did you know that opera season is in full swing in Europe in winter? Or that winter in Australia is often the best time to visit places in the north when the humidity and heat are bearable. Or how about visiting the best holiday markets in Germany in December? Do some research to find out what your chosen destination can offer in off peak, ones that you won’t experience in high season travel times.

So what are the negatives of traveling in the off peak? Well there are a few, but if you plan well you can overcome most drawbacks. Off peak usually means traveling in colder weather and that also means less daylight hours. Pack wisely and remember to dress in layers for the cold weather. Some tourist places close earlier or do not open at all in the off peak, so check up before you go so you are not disappointed. You will also find that in some areas the public transport system does not run as often as in peak tourist season. Find out what options you have to get to places and don’t be caught out missing the last bus home in the middle of winter, in the middle of nowhere! Some hotels and museums close down for the winter to re-furbish and get ready for the next high season influx of tourists. You can gamble and bargain your way to a great accommodation deal once you get to your destination, but all your bartering skills will be of no use if the hotels are all closed. It’s best to check what’s open before you go.

If traveling in the off-peak doesn’t sound attractive to you, then you might like to try the shoulder season and still get some travel price reductions. The shoulder season is considered the period leading up to and away from the high season. Usually in this time you’ll get decent weather, less crowds and lower travel costs – not the great bargains you’ll get in off peak, but lower costs nonetheless.

Traveling in a group? You are the holiday packagers dream! Imagine being able to offload bulk airline seats, rail passes and entertainment packages in one booking. A group traveling is a wanted commodity and because of this you can secure great deals for your group. But as always, beware of any hidden ‘extras’ such as cancellation policies and preferred partners when stepping outside the package. Be prepared to shop around for the best deal.

Here are some tips for the traveling group on a budget:

1. Travel insurance can be bought through some companies where savings can be ten percent or more. A group usually consists of four or more. Contact a number of travel insurance agencies and compare quotes.

2. Pack as many people as you can into your hotel room (keeping it legal). The more heads in the room, the higher the number to divide the cost by.

3. Renting a car when traveling in a group of four is usually cheaper than buying travel passes – and more convenient.

4. Food, guidebooks, taxi fares can all be split between the group bringing costs down.

5. Rail passes for groups or pairs may find discount offers in some countries.

6. Some airlines offer discount rates to groups of ten or more traveling together.

7. Group package bookings that have everything included in the price will have all expenses covered so you won’t be surprised by any extra costs, apart from shopping!

8. Discount holiday packages for large groups of travelers are offered through a number of travel agencies. Sports fans may be able to travel to big events using one of these travel packages for much cheaper than organizing it on their own.

If you want to join a group tour so you don’t have to travel alone consider all the pros and cons. Will there be like-minded people? Is there any flexibility to the travel arrangements? If not, will this outweigh the savings you’ll make on joining the tour? Some travelers like the convenience of all the travel arrangements being made for them. Group tour operators will find the best fares and reputable places to stay in. This saves you the hassle but it may mean that some of the cultural experiences you want will have to be put aside for the relatively cheaper ride.

Traveling in a family group can also benefit from a number of offers. Inform your booking agent that it is a family and ask about any special offers or deals. Can you visit any amusement parks or tourist attractions at family discount rates?

When traveling in a group, never be afraid to ask for a discounted rate. Everyone involved in the tourism trade is looking to get large numbers on seats or through doors. Groups are welcomed and catered for accordingly.

Worrying about the potential dangers which await you in a foreign land can be a little overwhelming particularly if you have not done a lot of travel. The best approach to this fear is to remember your worries are often exaggerated by the unknown element of travel overseas.

Dwelling on your safety while planning your trip will inevitably lead to further paranoia yet ignoring any potential risks only furthers your chance of being robbed or worse.

Look at it this way, Australia has many visitors and travellers arriving every year and they will have many worries about travelling in your home land. Speak to any British backpacker and they will be quietly shitting themselves about snakes and sharks, killer rips (thanks Bondi Rescue), jellyfish and huge unforgivable landscapes and don’t even mention the spiders. Many are seriously concerned that they will be bitten by any one of the many deadly insects which call Australia home and spend their last few minutes of life in unimaginable pain. It is not to say that the danger does not exist, but for those of us who live here it is not really a daily concern. The unknown and exaggerated can lead to this sort of worry.

What I am getting at is that any danger is amplified in our heads because it is sandwiched up in a big terrifying unfamiliar world. So when you are planning your trip to a far off land, how worried should you be about your safety?

Firstly, it is worth saying that there are some genuine risks out there and in some parts of the world these are so great you should consider whether travel to that location is worth it. These are normally caused by political instability, general high levels of violent crime, or it may be that a single girl might be at more risk than usual.

For most locations popular with Aussies and other tourists the threat to your personal safety will vary but as at home common sense and awareness of local conditions are the best defense when it comes to your personal safety.

Perhaps the biggest dangers you face while on the road are from common accidents. This might be in the form of a traffic accident out of your control or an incident that involves you, alcohol and or drugs. When you are asking is it safe there? It might be worth asking the same question before using the local transport on offer in places like Africa, South America and Nepal/India.

You may have little other choice but to ride in some dodgy packed out little bus: but this is probably a far greater risk in most places than violent crime. Same goes for being hammered on drugs or drink in any big city; at home or abroad it’s always a risk.

When it comes to petty crime; like the loss of your valuables then and travel scams then yes, some places there is a decent chance you will fall victim to theft of some kind. The chance of this theft being violent is usually low. Same goes for travel scams, which are another common form of tourist rip off from Rome to Mumbai. These scams usually involve fast talking con men rather than a fast right hand to the head.

Violent crime does happen, but you have to be either very unlucky or have low levels of common sense as it is pretty rare in Asia and Europe and not as common in African and South American countries as you might think (with honourable exceptions). Sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Latin America are places where daylight muggings do occur, but this is a risk minimised by simply not having anything of valuable on your person, or as little as possible.

For these types of places do your homework and know where the risky areas are in your chosen destination. Ask at your hotel, read your guidebook and be alert by not alarmed (like a fridge magnet once say). Choose not to wander around alone day or night, and avoid getting pissed and walking home from the local pub (taxi!). Using an ATM at 3am in places like Rio, Capetown or Nairobi? You may as well take that money and give it to charity.

Ask hotel or hostel staff about safe taxis and keep your wits about you wherever you are. As a tourist you are a target because you are likely to have more money than locals and you are easily spotted, so use common sense an don’t flaunt your cash and carry as little as you can with you when you are out and about.

Many cities will have well defined tourist areas with a high concentration of hotels/hostels to house the well healed. This area might be safe but in many cities straying outside these zones can sometimes be a risk, even by a few streets. Always ask at your hotel where to avoid (we are talking Africa and Latin America again).

Your safety while travelling is an incredibly tough thing to either generalise or give advice on. At the risk of sounding negative Aussies can at times generalise many foreign places as unsafe, while forgetting that many of these places are far more law abiding than home.

Drunken public behaviour in many countries is taboo, and many places have harsh penalties for even minor crimes. Crimes against tourists in countries that rely on the tourist trade can be horrific. Just don’t forget a night out in any big Aussie city can barely be described as a totally safe experience.

If you can ignore the ‘A Current Affair’ world view that it’s safer to stay indoors, away from the microwave and not calling the plumber for fear of rip off that’s a start. From there it’s just a matter of doing a bit of general research on your destination and using common sense when you get there.

There are only a few places so unsafe that you have to avoid them totally, a few which need extra caution while for the majority of destinations any risks can be managed with common sense.

Standing majestically, in the business district of Wanchai North, Central Plaza is world renowned for its astounding height and amazing architectural features. The building is magnificently positioned at 18 Harbour Road in Hong Kong and is 374 metres in height.

It was the Sino Group and Sun Hung Kai Properties that jointly developed this brilliant masterpiece. The construction of this 78 storey skyscraper was officially completed in August 1995. From the land acquisition to the completion of the project it took nearly 44 months. It is also estimated that to build just one floor it took about 4 days.

Today Central Plaza is an important landmark in Hong Kong. Out of its 78 storeys, 58 are separated as office space. This state of the art structure is fitted with 39 automated high-speed elevators and the overall working population within the building is estimated at a staggering 6,000. The building consists of 2 main components. One is the office tower that stands 368 metres high while the other is the podium block standing 30.5 metres high. One of the most unique and noteworthy features of Central Plaza is its triangular shaped floor plan. It was created in such way to provide maximum office space as well as to enjoy the best views of the harbour.

At the peak of this impressive building stand a neon clock and about 1,000 neon transformers have been used for the front wall. Every fifteen minutes the clock changes its color and every quarter it blinks and displays the time. Every hour a different color appears on this exceptional four bar neon clock. Furthermore, the building is home to the Community Church Hong Kong which is the world’s highest church. It is positioned on the highest floor of Central Plaza.

The Central Plaza is just one out of the many extraordinary Hong Kong attractions and staying at a hotel Hong Kong such as Hotel Jen makes sightseeing much more convenient, relaxing and exciting.

Driving 85 km from Kunming, we reached the town of Shilin. (Shilin means ‘stone forest’) This is home to the Sani ethnic minority people. Here, the Stone Forest sits on 350 sq. km area. The GPS location 24 49′ 27.95″ N 103 19’24.41 E will put you at the entrance.

My friend Rose was my guide through this amazing place. It took us about 4 hours to explore about half of this Unesco World Heritage site. It is also considered the first natural wonder of the world, being formed over 270 million years ago.

Walking through these giant stone karsks is a sensation for both your eyes and ears. The rock itself is an extremely hard stone. It feels like steel. Some of the stones make a musical sound when struck, while others make no sound at all. With our trusty map in hand, we worked our way through to the various points of interest along the way. The typical Yunnan weather of clear blue skies and sunshine only added to the unique lighting environment inside the stone forest.

I would consider this a must see stop during your tour of China. The park area has it’s touristy feel to it, but not to the extreme. It is easy to find yourself along exploring this unique forest of stone. After leaving the park and returning to Kunming, we stopped in Yi Yang and ate the best Peking Duck ever. I always stop in there when I am going in this direction from Kunming.

Long before people came to the Americas and took over the land the Indians lived in beautiful harmony with the land. They “lived light on the land”. Many tribes traveled from place to place depending on the food sources, weather and other conditions. They traveled with their homes and all of their earthly belongings. They respected the earth and had only what they could use.

I can safely say as a professional organizer that the majority of us “live heavy on the land”. We have homes we chuck full of things. Often these are things that have no meaning for us or things we once loved but no longer care about. Or we have collected too many things for the space we have and the clutter becomes overwhelming often causing anxiety and depression. Then we are concerned about organizing clutter that we have created and allowed to live with us. This can hold us back from doing things we really want to be doing. We start feeling stuck and burdened with things that once brought us joy because we have too much stuff—and it is just stuff.

If you would like to start “living light” here are five tried and true steps to organizing clutter:

1. Go room by room and decide what is working for you and what isn’t working for you. Evaluate if you use the item, if you like it, if someone else would enjoy it more, if it is just a dust collector. If it doesn’t light you up and you don’t enjoy it, it is time to let go.

2. Make the goal to pare down and get rid of things in each room. I can’t say get rid of 50% of what you have, it is your decision to make after you have done your evaluation. If you are uncomfortable getting rid of items that you purchased or someone gave you, set a goal of getting rid of whatever will fit in a bag or a box and then when you have that space organized and you feel good about it you can come back later and get rid of more things.

I had at least 55 VHS tapes on a book shelf which I haven’t watched in forever. I decided I wanted the space for other things so I took two plastic sacks and said I will fill these up and get rid of the tapes. I thought I was being generous and it would be hard to do. By setting a goal to fill those bags the job went fast and it was fun. Before I was done I had filled several sacks and I only kept 9 tapes in all.

I feel so much lighter and actually happier now I have organized all that clutter. I didn’t even realize I was just holding on to the tapes “in case I ever wanted to watch them”. I can get them from any video store any time; I don’t need them cluttering my home.

3. Work with a friend, family member or professional organizer. It is easier when working with someone who will reinforce your goal and help you decide to let go.

4. Just because you once loved the item and used it doesn’t mean you have to keep it. If you are afraid you will forget the memory, take a picture of the item and put it in a memory book. Or take a picture and down load it to your computer and make a memory file and send the photo to live in that file.

5. Organizing clutter means opening drawers and cupboards and organizing what is in them, not just the flat surfaces in the room. Do one drawer or one cupboard at a time. Don’t try to do it all at once. Doing too much all at once can be over whelming. Believe me the clutter will wait for you and you can come back and organize another day or time.

Organizing clutter can save you time and money. You won’t have to search for items you know you have and you won’t have to go out and buy more things because you can’t find what you now own.

Marilyn is a professional organizer and invites you to visit her website www.marilynbohn.com, She is a sought after public speaker and author who is passionate about teaching ways to organize your life and how to reduce clutter. She works with women in their homes and offices. On her web site she teaches you to get rid of clutter by using her Lights On Organizing System. She provides practical information on how to declutter your home, office and life. In her blogs, articles, and videos she gives timely tips on how to clear clutter and how to declutter everything in your home and office. She is the author of a book called Go Organize! Conquer clutter in three simple steps which will be in major bookstores in December 2009.
